About Us

The Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA) is a national professional non-profit organization whose mission is to enable women in all accounting and finance related fields to achieve their full personal, professional and economic potential and to contribute to the future development of their professions.

Formerly the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA), the organization was founded in 1938 and has grown to include chapters throughout the United States.  Our members are women and men who work in the accounting and finance professions as individual practitioners, partners and managers in local, regional and national accounting firms, professionals in industry, government, and academia, and as experts in accounting information systems. The majority of our members have attained professional certifications such as CPA, CMA, CIA, and CFP.

The District of Columbia Chapter of ASWA has been active since the 1940s.  Our members meet the third Tuesday of every month during September through June, interacting at dinner meetings, social and charity events.  We actively promote the continuing education of accounting and finance professionals by offering quality CPE programs convenient to members in the local Washington, D. C. area.  The chapter invites experts from our diverse professional and academic communities to present on relevant and emerging topics in the areas of accounting, finance, information systems, and management.

Our chapter outreach includes working with women in situations of disadvantage and in sponsoring the education of young people in the accounting and finance professions through our scholarship program.

We encourage you to attend our next event and learn more about our chapter.  For more information on our next meeting view our upcoming events schedule.
